Friday the 13th and Other Silly Superstitions

Everyone knows that today is Friday the 13th. Everyone knows what that means. It means bad things will happen today. Don’t get out of bed, don’t even peek over the covers because you know that bad luck will surely find you. Well that’s if you’re superstitious.

DSC_0386

Or if you’re this poor guy… I saw this minibus earlier today up town and by the time we got home (after stopping one place) it was three blocks from my home engulfed in flames. This guys Friday the 13th evidently was pretty shytty. I don’t think there were any injuries due to this fire. Thank goodness.

That brings me to the reason for this post. I’m going to share a few of the superstitions that have been passed down from generation to generation in my family.

black-cat-with-black-eyes

The main superstition that everyone knows is “Don’t let a black cat cross your path”. Personally, it freaks me out when one crosses my path lol. They say to counteract the curse, you must turn in a circle three times. And I do that LOL Even in my car. I’ve gone around the block three times before continuing on my way.

haloaroundthemoon

“If you see a halo around the moon, it means a storm is coming”. And it is true. Usually you see a halo around the moon in the colder months right before a snow storm. But I have seen them in the summer time, and they’re usually always accurate. The bigger the halo, the worse the storm.

article-2230328-01F443EF0000044D-622_634x799

“Don’t walk under a ladder, you’re sure to bring yourself bad luck”. I myself go out of my way to avoid walking under a ladder.

Broken_mirror_chaos_deities_death

“Break a mirror and it’s seven years bad luck”. And it’s happened with me lol.

Hedgeapple_closeup_2.1094931

Another bit of weather superstition… The bigger the hedge apples, the harder the winter. I’ve also noted this to be true.

keep-your-nose-out-of-my-business

“When your nose itches, someone’s coming without their britches.” or someone is just coming to see you.

ears-clip-art-8-150x150

“When your ears burn, someone is talking about you.”

ailmentSweatyPalms

When your left palm itches, it means you’re going to get a letter. When your right palm itches, it means you’re going to get money. If both itch, it means you’re going to get money in a letter. I’ve had this happen to me numerous times. Its always kind of fun!

img20050101_01_Orion

When the constellation Orion lays down, it means the weather is changing.

BigDipper

When the Big Dipper is tipping up, it means it will rain soon.

a-salt-shaker-which-has-fallen-over

If you spill salt, throw some of it over your left shoulder to ward off bad luck.

squirrel-ears_304913

When a Hedge Apples leaves are as big as a squirrels ear, the fear of frost is gone.

1854188_orig

When a broom falls over (on its own), company is coming.

fish-crow-01_13589_600x450

Crows have been said by Native Americans to be the souls of the dearly departed coming back to Earth to watch over their loved ones.

fairy_1482068c

If the mushrooms in your yard form a circle, the fairies will come out and play at night and cause mischief in your garden.

BayingAtMoon

When a dog beys or cries, it means someone has died.

Lavender-1

Always plant lavender for luck.

hand-crafted-rocking-chair

If a rocking chair rocks on its own, someone will pass away.

11246

An outdoor bird flying around in your house is surely a sign someone is going to die. Why is it that so many superstitions center around people dying?!

woolly-bear_BobCongdon

The size of the orange stripe on a Wolly Bear Caterpillar’s back shows how long and hard the winter will be.

squirrel-snow-on-tail

The bushier and thicker a squirrels tail is in the spring and summer shows how harsh the winter will be.

OK so a lot of my superstitions are weather based. Those are the ones that my grandpa always told me. He also told me, always plant your potatoes around St. Patty’s Day in the dark of the moon. So far so good, my potatoes are looking fabulous.

What kind of superstitions were you raised with? Let me know in the comments!

Influenster TLC VoxBox unboxing

Thanks to Influenster I got another awesome VoxBox!

What’s Influenster you might ask? It’s a social media-driven program where people with a high influence rating are sent boxes of goodies to review and experience in return for their honest opinions.

What’s a VoxBox? It’s the box of goodies I just mentioned. They’re filled with awesome items and sometimes coupons with items that can help you in your normal, every day lives.

This VoxBox RULED!

DSC_0609

The moment of unboxing!!!

DSC_0610

Oooo what ever could be inside??!

DSC_0613

The first item out of the box is this awesome little Neosporin Neo-To-Go ($4.97-$7.50). It provides protection plus pain relief right on the spot. As a busy mom of two I’m in constant need of something like this, thus it made its home in my purse!

DSC_0615

I also received this awesome vintage packaged bar of Ivory soap ($3.99 for a 10 pack), the soap we used to use when I was younger. I love its gentle scent and it’s uncanny knack of getting rid of even the most stubborn dirt and stains on your hands. Works just as good as Lava soap, only not as harsh!

DSC_0617

Another gem that headed straight for my purse for those unruly sniffles was a to-go pack of Puffs Plus Lotion tissues ($0.49 per single pack). I use these a LOT in the summer as hay fever and allergies kick my booty almost daily.

DSC_0618

Next up is Avon Anew Reversalist Express Wrinkle Smoother ($30). It states that it blurs the look of wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes instantly. Now I bet this is an awesome product, but unfortunately I can’t use it. I’m really allergic to pretty much every Avon cosmetic product :/ But you can go to AVON.com and receive 15% off your Anew purchase of $50 or more with the code ANEW15 !!! This code is valid until 8/1/14!

DSC_0619

Next up is a Shell Fuel Rewards Network Card, which is a free loyalty program that helps you save money on fuel. For a limited time, members can save 25 cents per gallon on their second fill up and 3 cents every time after!! How groovy is that?? Unfortunately, I don’t have any Shell stations around here, so this will be going to my dad lol.

DSC_0611

Last but not least I received a coupon for a free Breyers Gelato Indulgences ($4.49-$5.99). I could not WAIT to get this!!! But, as per usual, Walmart was out of them the two times I went to go get them. But, third time is a charm and I was able to get the Vanilla Caramel Indulgences!

10383490_646763172074507_6495230297047095539_n

I had never had gelato before, so I was a bit apprehensive. I sat down with a New Girl marathon and dove in and OMG. It is FANTASTIC. Its like sin in a cup!!!

10291818_646764095407748_7789941758416127983_n

The creamy, silky gelato was swirled with decadent caramel and topped in crunchy caramel shavings. It was so rich!!! It took me (and my husband, mom and daughter Biscuit) five days to finish it. By then I was hooked. I’m buying the chocolate next.

You can find Breyers Gelato Indulgences wherever Breyers products are sold!

This was a terrific VoxBox! If you’d like to know how you could receive awesome FREE goodies, just leave a comment with your email address and I will send you an invite!!!

In the life of The Good Witch

So I haven’t done this in awhile. Life has been busy and hectic with work and everything else. Summer break is upon us and now my little boy is hanging out with my sister for a month and my daughter and I are spending quality time together. So I’ve had other things on my plate. I hope you understand.
Not much has been going on around here. It’s been a really quiet storm season. As in we didn’t receive our first tornado warning in Kansas until I think yesterday or the day before. It had been a year. I mean c’mon!
The other night I did get a chance to watch some pretty awesome stormage come in.

Nothing better than setting up your camera on the sidewalk at midnight to stand out there for an hour because you thought the storm was coming faster than it really was.

This is actually a shot of a sheriffs cruiser going by. Pretty groovy, huh?

Another shot of a car going by. I really love those lol

Day Five: I'm so good at this, and soon I will be left high and dry with no outlet for my talent.
DSC_0556
So so pretty!!!

A really pretty sunset graced us sometime last week.

And we saw some awesome cloudage.

I got a new hedgie!!! Meet Hermes. Isn’t he adorable?! And the ruby slippers and yellow brick road are cellphone charms!

My petunias are looking so gorgeous!

And I have Dorothy staying over.

SO there’s a recap of the last few weeks. It’s been boring, to say the least!

Nail Art Tutorial: Nautical Nails

Alrighty! It’s been a long time since my last nail art tutorial… I’m sorry! I’ve been having doubts about my nail art abilities.

1017147_10152095979798929_328573198_n

They’re subpar, and I know it. But it’s fun, and I like to do it. So bite me LOL.

Anyways! Here’s the tutorial for some awesome summery nail art!

DSC_0007

HEre’s the supplies you’ll need: You’ll need a few polishes. I’m using a white and black from FingerPaints. I’m also using three shades from OPI; one that I frankened and called My Boyfriend Scales Blue Walls, Samoan Sand and Moscow Red. You could use any kind of beachy colors. You mainly need a brown or tan for the sand and a blue for the water. I also used a couple other polishes not shown, an Ella + Milla polish and Co-Bolt Blue from Sally Hansen. You’ll also need a few makeup sponges, a dotting tool and blue painters tape to make stripes out of.

DSC_0006

Make horizontal cuts with an Xacto knife on your roll of painters tape. You’ll need enough for two accent nails for both hands.

DSC_0008

Paint your nails with a base of white. It doesn’t really matter if it’s a little patchy in spots, or if it’s incredibly nasty all over your fingers. That’s what cleanup is for. Make sure you let this dry completely before you go on to the next steps.

DSC_0009

Starting off with the tan, build up a little patch of “sand” on one of your nails.

DSC_0010

Taking your blue painters tape strips, lay out the strips the way you want them. Preferably not like this. Because it’s all crooked. And weird looking.

DSC_0011

Take your red (or blue) polish and paint over the white and tape. Let it dry just a bit, then pull it off. If you have any messups, cover them up with a little white.

DSC_0012

Do the same with the blue.

DSC_0013

Add a couple more layers of tan.

DSC_0014

Then add your light blue, then a little bit of dark blue

DSC_0016

Then take a coral pink polish and doodle on a little starfish and a little shell or something.

DSC_0020

Add a few little waves with some tacky white polish and your dotting tool.

DSC_0022

Then on your thumb, or whatever other nail you have that you can’t figure out what to do with, sponge on a little blue and dark blue and then use your dotting tool to draw on a little sail boat. Then add some waves with white and blue.

DSC_0025

And then on your red striped fingernail, draw on a little anchor.

DSC_0030

Topcoat with your favorite topcoat and go!

DSC_0033

DSC_0034

Also attempt to do a crappy looking chevron pattern on your pinkie nail.
